Truly great intelligence never exists in a silo. All of humanity's greatest discoveries have relied on the foundational science and findings of those who came before. As large language models like Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol become far more capable, that collaboration now includes collective intelligence between people and machines.
Software is where that partnership is furthest along. Autonomous workforces now carry real work alongside people, and a company that works with one gains a new kind of teammate.
It is a collaboration every company already knows from the inside. The best engineer who ever joined your team arrived with everything a fantastic career can teach, and yet still spent their first weeks learning what only your company could teach them: why the billing code bends around one customer's fiscal calendar, what it means here when someone calls a change good. A year later, the team could not imagine building without them. Their intelligence had not changed; a world had grown around it.
In our founder letter, we wrote that intelligence alone is not enough. It never has been. A working mind, human or machine, needs a world around it, and building that world for machine intelligence is the work of Codespeed Intelligence.
The strength of a coordinated team in motion
In the 1980s, the cognitive scientist Edwin Hutchins went to sea with the US Navy to understand how ships find their way, and found that the navigation did not happen inside any single mind. It lived in the crew, the instruments, the charts, and the procedures, working together as one thinking system.1 He called it distributed cognition, and anyone who has worked on a good team has felt it.
A company is that system grown large and grown old. Its intelligence lives in the code and the documentation, and just as much in the decisions that changed them, the exceptions it learned to make, and the sense of whose judgment to seek when the answer is unclear. It is the most valuable thing a company owns, and it is exactly what the most capable machine minds ever built arrive without.
Raw brilliance is only part of great thinking
A frontier model can reason through problems that would occupy a strong engineer for a day, yet it begins every session the way that engineer began their first morning. It perceives only what someone hands it. Nothing it learns changes what it becomes, nothing settles while it rests, being right or wrong costs it nothing, and no reputation follows it from one session to the next. It can produce brilliant work, and it remains a stranger.
None of this is a new discovery. Cognitive science has spent forty years describing what turns raw cognition into a working mind: attention that decides what gets noticed, memory that consolidates during sleep, knowledge that survives by being organized and used.2 The ideas have been waiting for a place to live, somewhere with real work, real stakes, and people whose judgment could correct them.3
Building AI intelligence beyond the model
Codespeed Intelligence is that place. It is the system we build around model cognition, giving an AI workforce what the engineer's first year gave them: senses, memory, consequences, sleep, initiative, and a reputation among the people it works with.
Inside Codespeed, work begins the way it begins on any strong team, with an objective and someone accountable for it. Lead Dev carries the direction, specialists take up the parts that belong to them, and what comes back arrives with the context and decisions that shaped it. When the team accepts that work, corrects it, or sends it back, the judgment stays with the work, and the next attempt begins closer to how the company builds. Codespeed Dreaming lets the workforce sleep on reviewed work and return sharper. Trust behaves here the way it behaves everywhere: the history stays visible, good judgment widens what the team will hand over, and a mistake draws review closer.
This is what recursive self-improvement looks like in practice: a workforce whose next attempt is shaped by the judged outcome of its last, compounding inside boundaries the company sets and can always see. Security draws those boundaries first, deciding what the workforce can reach and which decisions come back to a person.
Your company is its own collective mind
It would be easy to read all of this as a company manufacturing an artificial mind, but that is not what we have built. Codespeed builds the capacity to learn; what gets learned comes from the company itself: the standards its people hold, the corrections they make once, the taste its best engineers have spent years refining.
This is why our letter calls collective intelligence the new frontier. The gains do not live inside the model, or even inside our product. They grow between a company's people and its workforce, and they belong to the company that made them, outlasting any single session, any single project, and any single model.
One day, without anyone deciding it, a new colleague is simply part of the team, operating and working with all of the innate knowledge of the team. It happened for the best engineer you ever hired, and the first colleagues who are not human are crossing it now.
The way through the frontier is together
No one crosses a frontier alone. The great crossings, from the ocean floor to the moon, belonged to crews joined by one purpose. The frontier before us asks for a new kind of crew, people and machines sharing context, judgment, consequences, and learning, each more capable because the other is there. Codespeed Intelligence is how a company forms that crew and keeps what it learns. Like the frontier we wrote about in our letter, this one will be crossed together.
